As the world started re-opening in 2022, Religion of Sports had a question for Robin: how can ROS re-engage soccer fans, host a brand activation, and rekindle our love for The Beautiful Game in a public setting? With 2022 World Cup right around the corner, what could be better than meeting up with a group of friends and watching the tournament somewhere other than your couch?
In collaboration with Street FC and Kyle Martino’s soccer speakeasy No One Home, the Robin team established programming, designed the space, and fabricated a multi-week World Cup watch party in less than two months. We wanted to pay homage not only to The Beautiful Game but also to NYC and the almost religious fervor soccer fans have for their national teams. We used the pervasive scaffolding of New York as a jumping-off point, using it to function as both barriers within the space as well as displays for wayfinding, pivotal World Cup moments, and informative signage. We also supplemented that with devotionals throughout the space, denoting them with votive candles and milk crates functioning as altars.
From panels hosted by Deepak Chopra and interviews with former USWNT star Carli Lloyd and Olympian Alexi Pappas, to pickup games hosted by Street FC and multiple documentary screenings from Kicking + Screening, the basement and speakeasy of No One Home were filled every night. Over 1,200 people filled the venue throughout two weeks, with six pickup games of 90+ players played throughout Chinatown and the Bronx.
